**Overview**

The Bernhard Mechanical Engineer Intern’s primary purpose is to be given opportunities for practical skills, workplace experience, and greater knowledge in the Engineering Industry. Interns will be given opportunities within mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and/or commissioning. The Intern upholds Bernhard’s owner advocacy philosophy and organizational core values.

Candidates will be responsible for working with a licensed Mechanical Engineer for renovations, new construction and for energy retrofits of existing buildings. This work will include heating and cooling load calculations, equipment selection, cost estimating, specification writing, submittal review, construction administration and project closeout.

**Responsibilities**

Specific responsibilities include:

+ Mechanical design of energy retrofit projects and infrastructure projects as prime consultant.

+ Mechanical design of new construction projects and renovation projects in conjunction with an architect.

+ Coordinate mechanical requirements with electrical engineer, architect, structural engineer and civil engineer.

+ Fieldwork for mechanical systems on renovations and energy retrofits.

+ Heating and cooling load calculation.

+ Piping and ductwork system pressure drop analysis.

+ Mechanical and front-end specification preparation.

+ Perform progress inspections and final project punch list inspection.

+ Communicate in a professional and productive manner.

This position is Full Time, Non-Exempt, and reports to the Mechanical Engineer.

**Qualifications**

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications:

+ Currently working towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry

+ Computer literate; knowledge of applicable software

+ Possess an in-depth combination of analytical and investigative skills

+ Ability to identify and evaluate options, implement solutions and resolve complex problems.

+ Strong written and oral communication skills.

Travel Requirements:

+ Infrequent travel to Company or client locations. Approximately 10% of time will be spent traveling.

Physical/Work Environment Requirements:

+ The ability to sit and or stand for long periods of time at a desk. The ability to walk, sit, stand, and climb on job sites as needed. The ability to lift up to 15lbs.
